Photojournalism  began  with  Matthew
Brady
in  the  American  Civil  War and
gained world attention with
Henri-Cartier
Bresson, Robert Cappa and Alfred
Eisenstadt.  Have any landscapes ever
rivaled those of
Ansel Adams?  Richard
Avedon became renowned for his
photographic  contributions  to  Fashion as
well as Fine Arts.  
Yousuff Karsh was a
master of  portraiture. The discussion will
continue as long as photography evolves.

We can't  help but see the world in color.  
But  with  a  little  effort, we can shift our
focus and look more  closely  at texture,
shape and form, contrast and an intangible
called mood.  We can find these features in
portraiture, landscapes, architecture and in
the daily scenes and activities all around us.  
Thus focused,  we  just  might find the
richness of B&W photography that was
exploited by the photographers cited above.

us to this ver y day  
The  photo by Steve McCurry
is an example of photojournalism at its' best.  It is
also an example of the power of color in telling a
story.   But as  powerful  as the story of Sharbat
Gula was, and as  effective as color was in telling
the her story, there are many more stories to be
told.  And there are many more ways to tell them.

Black and white photography is one of
the ways.

Many critics believe that color photography has
never matched  the black and white images of the
founders of  photography.  Monochrome  photos  
render clear, detailed views of images without the
clutter of color.   They allow our eyes to dwell on
