developed an enduring interest in
watercolors. Recently, Janet has taken an
interest in egg tempera. Janet retired from
the East Brunswick School System, having
served as a teaching assistant in the Special
Education Department.
Janet’s gallery includes paintings covering
the large range of her interests. We are
pleased to include works from her high
school years through to the present day.
“RockArt,” bit of whimsy in the form of
painted rocks caught my eye as I was
photographing her work. She generously
permitted me to include the photo in her
gallery. While watercolors make up the
majority of her work, this local artist
enjoys experimentation. Her studio is
bright and cheerful as easels are set up
with several pieces being competing for her
attention.
Crestwood Artists’
Guild member, Janet
Levy was born in
Brooklyn, New York.
She attended St Mary, Star of the Sea
grammar school and Prospect Heights High
School. Her interest in the world of art
began early in her childhood with a love for
sketching. Janet recounts how her high
school art teacher further nurtured this
interest, which has been so important to
her throughout her life.
Ms Peters singled our Janet as a freshman
and encouraged her to paint every chance
she had. Janet drew a great deal of
inspiration from the Brooklyn Botanical
Garden, which was close to her home.
Fortunately, we have three original
watercolor paintings in her gallery from
this early period.
After graduating from high school, Janet
was employed by Staples Smith Window
dressers in Brooklyn. Later, she worked
for Volland Greeting Cards and Norcross
Greeting Cards in New York City.
Throughout her business career and
marriage, Janet continued her art education
by taking courses in calligraphy, silkscreen
production and offset printing. Robert
Heyer of Milltown New Jersey was her
mentor and under his influence, she
